Planting a single tree

Every household in Wales can get a free tree, to help tackle the climate crisis.

You can apply for a free tree from the Woodland Trust. If you don’t have the space to plant a tree, you can get one planted on your behalf.

If you are planting a single tree in your garden or on another piece of land, you will need to consider:

  • if you are planting trees near any buildings, consider the size that the tree will grow to
  • if roots and branches spread far and wide, they could cause structural damage
  • not growing trees in pots as they would outgrow them and suffer stress if moved at a later stage

Permission to plant your woodland

Before you can plant any trees, you will need to:

If you don’t own the land, you will need permission to plant your trees from the legal landowner. You can find out who owns the land on the Land Registry website.

You may need an environmental permit from us before you can start planting any trees.

Planting on public land

If you want to plant trees on public land, contact us for help and guidance.

Grants for planting trees and creating woodlands

There are grants available for planting trees and creating woodland. You can use the grants to help you plan and develop your new woodland. The grants are available throughout the year.

You can also get trees and grants from the Woodland Trust if you are:

  • planting a single or a few trees
  • part of a community group
  • a school
  • a farmer
